Course Description: This hands-on workshop covers assessment testing, friction therapy, myofascial and deep tissue techniques for addressing pain and injury in commonly affected areas like the neck, shoulder, lower back and knee. You will understand the anatomy of these structures like never before by locating and palpating each muscle, tendon and ligament. The assessment testing procedures are from Dr. James Cyriax. The treatment techniques were developed from Dr. Benajamin’s clinical practice.
Bio
Dr. Ben E. Benjamin holds a Ph.D. in Sports Medicine. After studying with Dr. James Cyriax, the “father of orthopedic medicine,” he applied his insights to the healing of common soft tissue injuries through skilled massage therapy. He developed the profession of muscular therapy and, in 1974, founded the Muscular Therapy Institute. Dr. Benjamin has been in private practice for more than 40 years and currently practices in Cambridge, Massachusetts, helping clients to maintain their health as well as to recover from injury or chronic pain. He teaches extensively throughout the country on topics related to orthopedic massage and communication skills.
Dr. Benjamin is the author of Listen to Your Pain, Are You Tense?: The Benjamin System of Muscular Therapy, and Exercise Without Injury and co-author of Ethics of Touch. He has published hundreds of articles on issues ranging from injury assessment and treatment to coaching and communication skills. Course Details:
Check-in will open at 8:30am. Course will promptly start at 9:00am. You must be present for the entire class time to receive CE hours. The instructor will be providing your certificates and will provide details on how you will receive them.
There will be a one-hour lunch break. You will be able to purchase lunch from the hotel. A limited menu will be provided for you to preorder and pay in the morning before class starts. Otherwise please bring your lunch as there are no other options in the area to get you back to class on time.
Students must bring:
- Massage table
- 2 sheets, a few face-cradle covers, towel
- Printed or electronic copy of the course manual
- Massage oil or lotion
- Please wear loose, comfortable, and layered clothing
Registration and Fees:
Registration will open May 7, 2025. The class is open to AMTA members and preregistration is required. Completed registrants will receive an email from the registration platform (CVENT). Please do not unsubscribe from these emails as you will miss future course updates and course handouts.
Course handout will be emailed on July 11, 2025 (one week before class). Please note that this manual is 34 pages. No printed handouts will be available on site. Participants are responsible for printing or having electronic copies of the course handout.

A refund of 50% of registration fees is given if we receive an email (EducationAMTACT@gmail.com) by June 17, 2025. Any person cancelling after this date is not guaranteed a refund. Requests must be made by email (EducationAMTACT@gmail.com) by midnight July 19, 2025. All requests will be reviewed by the chapter board of directors at their next meeting.
